ADAPTIVE TECHNOLOGY
What is Adaptive Technology?
The Prospector Theater believes that moviegoing must be an inclusive experience. In the movie industry, adaptive technology is equipment used to assist a guest in experiencing a movie. The two primary devices that help achieve this are Audio Description Headsets and Closed-Captioning Devices. It’s more than just moviegoing! Technology can also be adapted and modified to make any task or job easier and accessible.
Why is Adaptive Technology important?
From the perspective of operating a movie theater, having Adaptive Technology available is not only the right thing to do (and a legal requirement), but it’s also a smart business decision. The more guests that are able to enjoy a movie at the Prospector means more ticket sales, popcorn sold, and beverages poured! We believe in breaking down barriers. Every job, activity, and project should be accessible.
What kind of Adaptive Technology do we have?
Some of the Adaptive Technology used at the theater include Audio Description Headsets, Closed-Captioning Cupholders, C-Pen Readers, Modified Point of Sale screens to include images and custom colors, timers/clocks in the break room, braille labels over terminal screens, ambidextrous popcorn scooper, “Check Before You Prospect” signage, and so much more! Prospects check and maintain our Adaptive Technology daily, ensuring it’s ready for your arrival!
How can guests request Adaptive Technology or other accommodations?
In addition to calling the Box Office at (203) 438–0136, guests can use the Special Accommodation Request Form.
ACCESSPARKLE PROFILE: KENNY
What is Accessparkle?
Accessparkle is a team at the Prospector dedicated to discovering, rigor-testing, developing, and experimenting with the latest adaptive technologies and accessibility services. Prospects on the Accessparkle team equip their fellow Prospects with supports, tools, technologies, workarounds, and accessibility measures that let them shine in the workplace!
Kenny - Accessibility Checker
Kenny is one of our Accessparkle Prospects. One of Kenny’s main jobs is to check our website for screen-reader compatibility, making sure it’s accessible for guests who are blind or have low vision. He reviews text, photos for appropriate captions, downloadable documents, and web forms. Over the last year, Kenny has rigor-tested accessibility within the virtual work world. Kenny’s experiences with Zoom, Google Meets, and other virtual platforms helped inform the Theater about useful technologies, like an auxiliary mute/unmute button for video conferencing. While working at the Theater, Kenny uses Braille to navigate our Point of Sale system, helping guests to purchase tickets, gift cards, and make donations.
SERVICE ANIMALS
What is a service animal?
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), a service animal is an animal that is trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. The only legally recognized service animals are dogs and mini-horses*. Service animals are not pets; they are working animals with very important jobs.
Can I pet a service animal?
No. Refrain from petting, talking to, and interacting with service animals. Remember, they are working. Any distraction could jeopardize the health and safety of their handler.
Can I bring my service animal to the Prospector?
Absolutely! Prospects have been expertly trained on how to welcome guests with service animals. Through an ongoing partnership with Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Prospects regularly welcome, and engage with, guests with service animals, ensuring that everyone can enjoy our sparkletastic moviegoing experience!
Open Caption Screenings
What is an Open-Captioned Screening?
The Prospector Theater is on a mission to make moviegoing accessible for all. Displaying Open Captions on-screen during select showtimes ensures that every guest can enjoy the newest Hollywood blockbusters in an inclusive environment!
Audiences can expect a typical moviegoing experience. The lights in-house will be turned off to allow guests to be immersed in the story and the volume will remain theatrical. At the bottom of the screen, captions of dialogue will appear in tandem with speech.
When is the next Open Caption Screening?
All first-run features will display Open Captioning on Wednesdays.
These showtimes will be scheduled monthly during prime-time moviegoing hours. Check our “Showtimes” page for Open Caption screenings, email us at info@prospectortheater.org, or call our Box Office Prospects and join us for a truly sparkling experience!
